Help Your Body Heal Better, Faster and With More Certainty

Posted by Marietta chiropractor on December 3, 2014

How does your body heal?  How can you help it…or should you even try?

In our thoroughly modern, “scientific” age, we employ all sorts of therapies and remedies to “enhance” or “speed” the healing process.  And quite often, we take drugs to ease the pain and symptoms CAUSED by the healing process.  BUT, I would suggest to you that there is a better way.

Now before I start, I’m not telling you not to go to the ER if you’ve been involved in an accident and need immediate attention.  I’m talking about routine chronic problems that never get to heal and diminish your quality of life.  And well, what I’m about to tell you might even help that broken arm heal better, too.

Your body heals itself much like a mason repairs a damaged wall.   A crew is brought in to remove the damaged parts and prepare the way for rebuilding the wall.  Then new materials are brought in to replace the old damaged material.  A competent and capable body (like the mason) will get the job done in the appropriate amount of time.

How does your body repair itself?

How does your body repair itself?

However, If the nervous system is compromised, the process simply will not function appropriately.  It’s like the mason gets the word late and is not quite prepared for the job.  Then we take something to ease the pain and it’s like giving the mason a bottle of booze to keep him from getting mad.  He can’t focus and just takes longer to do the job at less than 100%.

Enter the chiropractor.  He/she makes sure the brain gets the right signal and proper instructions and the right mason are then sent to the damaged/sick area.  The demolition and repair are done correctly and timely.

So if you want to make sure your body heals properly and as efficiently and effectively as possible, find a good chiropractor that ONLY ADJUSTS the spine to remove this thing we call a vertebral subluxation.  You’ll be glad you did.

Networking

Posted by Marietta chiropractor on November 14, 2014

NETWORKING

I’ve been a “networker” for years. As a young banker, we were required to belong to a civic group like Optimist, Rotary, etc. As you advanced in the bank, your membership at either the country club or dinner club was paid by the bank. These days, “networking” is more direct with the specific intent to GET business.

One of the problems with “networking” these days is the myopic effort to “pitch” yourself in 30-60 second sound bytes. While that might get you some referrals, that gets boring and painfully “salesy”.

IF you’re going to “network”, why not try a longer term approach of GIVING. Instead of silently rehearsing your “pitch” till it’s your turn to stand up and spew, why not make the effort to LISTEN to others make their presentation. THEN think of all the people you know (family, friends, associates) who could possibly use the services of your fellow networkers? Become a resource for everyone you know and they will naturally think of you when someone needs what you have to offer.

The Law of Reciprocation works. As President Kennedy stated “All boats rise with the tide”. We’re in the helping business. Why not help as many people as you possibly can in as many ways as you can. It will add new meaning to your life and you practice.

Are you funcioning in an altered state of consciousness?

Posted by Marietta chiropractor on August 27, 2014

You could be.

You already know that Americans take more drugs of any kind of any other country on the planet.  In fact, ALL the other countries in the World COMBINED take a mere fraction of the drugs that Americans do.  A large portion of those drugs are for diagnosed psychiatric conditions, including Depression, ADD/ADHD, anxiety, bipolar disorder, etc.  Another large portion of those drugs are for pain and other symptoms, and some are taken for chronic health conditions.  Some are prescribed and some are bought over the counter.

But there’s one thing they ALL have in common, they alter your (and your body’s) state of consciousness.  That’s right.  Every drug you take affects how you see the world.  And how you see the world, determines your thoughts, emotions and actions.

Look.  I’m not saying all medications are bad…in the short term.  What I AM saying is that drugs work BECAUSE they are designed to convince your body it either has something it’s not supposed to have or doesn’t have something it should.  In other words, drugs trick your body into behaving a certain way, whether that is altering chemical levels, suppressing normal immune function or directly affecting your brain and nervous system.

Without saying ANYTHING about all the potential hazards and side-effects posed by taking ANY drug, the long term affect of altering your body’s normal responses to even a single problem can be devastating.  Whether it’s diminished function of a particular system in the body or bad decision making or outright addiction, they all lead to a lower quality of life for you, your friends and associates, and your family members.  When you multiply that by the tens of millions of people taking drugs/medications, you can see the potential harm to an entire culture.

The thing I love most about Chiropractic is that it’s purpose is to help you function at a higher lever NO MATTER what your current circumstance may be.  And the longer you function at higher levels of awareness, the better your life can be.  Imagine how different your life would be right now and how much better it could be if you improved your thoughts, decisions and actions could improve by just 10%.  I think it would be remarkable.

Do what you can to get clean and stay clear.  Your life will thank you for it.

Chiropractic Missions and The Membership Practice

Posted by Marietta chiropractor on November 1, 2010

In the late 90s, Dr. Jim Sigafoose lead a series of chiropractic missions to Central America.  Over a span of a dozen years, hundreds of chiropractors participated in those missions adjusting hundreds of thousands of people.  Still today, chiropractors do missions work all over the world.

Some of these missions stand out for several reasons.  One was the miracles.  People with chronic illness were healed.  The lame began to walk, the blind to see, the infirm strengthened and the hopeless regained hope.  Another reason was the sheer number of people served.  In single trips lasting up to 10 days, literally hundreds of thousands were adjusted by a mere handful of chiropractors.  Some  adjusted at least 10,000 in a single mission.  That’s 1,000 a day!  Probably one of the greatest things that resulted from those missions is that some chiropractors were set free of limitations.

I remember Sigafoose telling folks one time that participating in a mission had the potential for making or ruining a chiropractor’s practice.  When asked what he meant, he responded “You never see yourself or chiropractic in the same light again.  You’ll either go back and tear down the walls that limit you and chiropractic OR you’ll go back to where you were and resent the things you let hold you back.”

Some chiropractors returned and literally tore down the walls  and began adjusting in the open.  Others began to simplify their procedures and systems.  Still others converted to “All cash” practices to remove interference in their practice by third party payors..

Even today, many chiropractors say “How can it be that simple?”  One answer is to stop practicing as limited scope medical doctors diagnosing every patient and jumping through the hoops required to get paid by insurance carriers.  Still others have been pigeon-holed by their so-called chiropractic “education” into thinking you can’t possibly deliver quality chiropractic care to that many people in that short span of time.  Nothing could be further from the truth.

So, how could so few adjust so many in such a short period of time and STILL give quality chiropractic care?  The answers may amaze you.  Here’s just a few reasons why it worked:

  • Few words were spoken – Because of the language barrier, a simple presentation was made by an interpreter to large groups before getting in line.
  • Adjustments were limited to the upper cervical spine.  In other words, deliver the MOST effective adjustment to the MOST people in the LEAST amount of time.
  • Simplest procedures possible.  No paperwork.  No insurance.  No CYA.  No BS.  Chiropractic analysis ONLY.
  • No worries about money.  Many will say “Of course they were busy.  It was free!”  They paid plenty, just not as a direct fee.
  • The chiropractors had no distractions like phones, families, news, sports or world events.

Many have asked since those mission trips, “How can I integrate THAT perspective into my practice here in the US?”  The simple answer is “You can’t.”  Well, you can’t INTEGRATE that perspective into a traditional American-style chiropractic practice.  Simply put, today’s chiropractic is practiced literally from a Medical perspective with all it’s procedures and complexity.  And to make a point, THAT is exactly what chiropractic wasn’t (and isn’t) at its core.

You can’t integrate simplicity into complexity.  But, you CAN replace complexity with simplicity.  I know it sounds difficult to do.  But, so is falling off a log.  The hardest part is simply deciding to opt out of the complex system practiced here in the US.

Here’s the key.  SIMPLIFY!   That’s it.  Just like with those mission trips, you get back to the very basics of what we do as chiropractors.

  • Tell the story in as few words as possible to as many people as you possibly can.
  • Don’t waste words on idle chatter.
  • Limit paperwork and procedures to the bare minimum required.
  • Do JUST chiropractic!  Locate and correct subluxations.  No medical diagnosis.  Better yet, do ONLY what is necessary.  If nothing else, make sure the Atlas is clear.
  • Offer a simple, affordable fee system that fits into most people’s budget.  Unlimited care plans at a fixed fee makes sense to me.

Personally, I have found The Membership Practice the most congruent way to practice.  The concept is not new, but growing.  I challenge every chiropractor who wants to enjoy their practice more by doing JUST chiropractic to simplify their business on every level.

What IS a Chiropractic Smile?

Posted by Marietta chiropractor on May 24, 2010

Have you ever known someone who just always seems to be smiling?  They seem to ALWAYS feel good.  Nothing seems to bother them.

Well, what you’re seeing is someone who’s comfortable in their own skin.  They’re confident in who they are and what they are.  Life is not defined by their fears but by their faith in knowing they don’t have to live in fear…of anything.

OK.  So what does this have to do with chiropractic?  You probably know folks like that who have NEVER seen a chiropractor.  So have I. BUT, I’ve also seen lots of folks over the years who USED to live in fear of sickness, disease, infirmity and uncertainty who now live powerful lives.  OK.  OK.  Chiropractic.

Here’s the real power of chiropractic.  Chiropractic is based on the premise that everything in the Universe is organized.  In fact, that organization gives all matter its properties and maintains it in existence.  And, that organization is obviously in all living things.  In living things, that mechanism’s job is to help you (and all living things) be the MOST and ?BEST you can be.  It interprets the environment and stimulus around you and responds appropriately.  It knows what is the right chemical balance in YOUR body and dispenses the right hormones in the right amount at the right time.  Really, it’s beautiful!

In fact, it’s the “thing” that keeps all the individual cells, tissues, organs and systems in your body working together in harmony to keep you functioning.   It’s THAT mechanism that leaves a living thing when it dies.  In fact, that mechanism STOPS working the moment you die.  There is STILL life in your body.  It’s just not coordinated.  The life that’s left is random, each individual cell doing ITS very best to survive.  That’s what happens when your body decomposes.  The organizing mechanism leaves you and chaos is left.

That organizing mechanism CAN be diminished in living things, particularly humans.  It can be disturbed by chemical, physical or emotional stress.  The more of these stresses that exists, the more chaotic the organization of the function of the cells, tissues, organs and systems in your body.  In other words, the diminished organization actually causes “less life”.  Eventually, this can lead to sickness, infirmity and disease.  In an effort to deal with the symptoms of this disorganization, people are convinced that drugs can help or that surgery can remove an offending organ.  Sadly, these remedies only mask the EFFECTS of a disorganized body while allowing the REAL problem to continue.

Folks under long term chiropractic wellness care routinely remove a significant cause of this disorganization.  So, their bodies work in a more organized way.  When that happens, they have less need for drugs or surgery.  As they learn to trust and listen to their bodies, they move in a more powerful, independent way.  Their confidence in themselves, their design and the Design for their life continues to grow.  The more they’re able and willing to listen to that little voice inside them, the more powerful their health and life.  Things just work better.  And like money invested routinely with interest and dividends reinvested, their life becomes even more dynamic.

So, the chiropractic smile is power, strength, confidence and joy on the inside expressed on the outside.  My wish for you is that you’ll want to experience this power in your life.  Find a wellness chiropractor that is confident in your potential.  If you can’t find one or don’t know how to find one near you, let me know.  I’ll help you find one.

My Chiropractic Blue Ocean Strategy

Posted by Marietta chiropractor on May 3, 2010

One of my favorite business books is Blue Ocean Strategy by W. Chan Kim.  In the book, Kim relates marketing products to the competition for fish in the shallow waters near the shore.  You’ve got fishermen and predators churning the waters for a limited supply of easy prey.  So what happens is that competition is stiff and eventually the sharks begin to attack and prey on themselves.  However, as you go further out to deep waters (the blue ocean) the supply is plentiful and the competition almost non-existent.  My profession, chiropractic, is like that, too.

Business is alot like that, too.  Especially in my profession where we have somewhere between 50-60,000 chiropractors competing for 7-10% of the population who regularly use chiropractors for back pain and neuromuscular problems.  Further still, chiropractors (as a profession) has tried to fit itself within a traditional allopathic approach to healthcare, dependent on third party reimbursement systems like insurance, personal injury, Workman’s Compensation and Medicare/Medicaid.  In so doing, they ensured that their competition is expanded to orthopedists, neurologists, physical therapists and even massage therapists.  Needless to say, the waters get chummed up pretty badly leaving lots of wounded practitioners, causing many to leave the profession altogether.

However, chiropractic in its founding was not as much a specific cure for anything.  Instead, it’s power was in removing a major source of interference in the proper function of the nervous system, THE master control system for your entire body.  When this interference is reduced, you simply function better.  You perceive your environment more clearly.  Your body perceives itself better.  You function at a higher level in every aspect of your life.  When that happens, you’re healthier, happier and simply are living life closer to your God-given potential.

So from my perspective, by staying in the shallow water of back pain and neuromuscular conditions, chiropractors confine themselves to selling you based on your weakness instead of your power.  Their marketing strategies are designed more to scare you into their offices instead of inspiring you into your own health and personal power.  Fee systems are based on what your insurance company will pay, which in many cases includes added charges for a variety of outside modalities.  So instead of a fee system that allows you to include chiropractic care as part of a lifestyle choice for you and your family, you get billed as much as possible for the limited number of visits allowed by your insurance carrier.

In the chiropractic blue ocean, people seek out the chiropractor to help them and their family feel better, work better and live better.  Just like the long term benefits of exercise, you are healthier and feel better.  You no longer need to go to your MD as much simply because you don’t get sick or hurt nearly as often.  You don’t think twice about your regular visits to the chiropractor because it’s just part of what you do.  Further, this new strategy includes a fee system that is based on lifetime wellness care instead of short term crisis care.  Somewhat like your health club membership, it rewards you for regular use both in financial and health benefits.  In my office, that fee is an annual fee that is less than your typical out-of-pocket costs with a standard health insurance policy.

One of the prejudices some people have about us chiropractors is that we want you to keep coming for the rest of your life.  OF COURSE WE DO!  We want you to enjoy your life, ALL OF IT from now on!

One of my mentors often asked “What is your profession?  What do you profess?”  I profess wellness and wholeness.  My fees are merely an extension of my profession.  I am neither a medical doctor or physical therapist.  I AM a chiropractor that helps you get the most out of your life for the rest of your life.  There’s room out here in the deep water to swim and play without fear of being eaten by the sharks.  Come on out!

So, Doc. What If I Don’t Need a Miracle Healing?

Posted by Marietta chiropractor on April 19, 2010

Chiropractic is powerful stuff if practiced from its Principles.  When a chiropractic adjustment (especially a specific Upper Cervical adjustment) is delivered, it relieves stress on the nervous system allowing your body to do miraculous things.  Having said that, I wonder how many people really hear that story AND if they do, how many are even motivated by it?

People are so bombarded with outrageous claims on everything from miracle juices from exotic jungles to vaccinations for Swine flu, as well as from car dealers to soap peddlers.  So, the natural reaction is to simply turn down the volume OR go to the bathroom at the commercial break.  In other words, when we start railing on the evils of Medicine and our own miraculous healings, folks tend to tune us out.

Granted, most chiropractors see plenty of people desperate for hope and who have come to us when all else has failed them.  But generally, people stay under chiropractic care because it simply makes them feel better than they ever have before and enables them to do more of what they want when they want and how they want.  The side benefit, oddly enough, is that they no longer suffer from back pain or migraines or seizures or ulcers or cancer.

I think one reason only 7-10 percent of Americans go to chiropractors is that chiropractors do a crappy job of telling our story.  We assume that the only ones who need us are the ones suffering from some health malady.  Our whole message is centered around death and sickness when our Principles are based in life and vitality.

Honestly, I KNOW the miracles that are happening inside a person when I adjust them.  I want MORE people to receive those same miracles.  But, it’s not fair to ask someone who’s never been exposed to chiropractic to eat the whole elephant in a single sitting.  If they have the chance to digest a bite at a time, they’ll understand over time, will remain under my care and tell all their friends about how great their life is since they discovered chiropractic.

So, my message is simple “If you want a better, fuller, more expressive life…get adjusted.  Stay adjusted.”

Yeah, But I Really Like That Roller Table Thing

Posted by Marietta chiropractor on April 18, 2010

It’s always interesting to hear people’s reaction when I tell them I’m a chiropractor.

There’s always the response from folks who don’t have a chiropractor, “I don’t need a chiropractor.  My doctor just gave me a nerve block.”  Of course, there’s the “Oh yeah.  I went to a chiropractor a long time ago when I had a car wreck.”  More and more often these days, I’m hearing  “Oh, I LOVE my chiropractor!”  If you’re a chiropractor, you’ve become accustomed to these and similar responses.

But of all the responses I get, the one that bothers me the most is “Yeah, I go to the chiropractor.  But, I REALLY like that roller table thing.”  It feels really good.”

Why would such an honest and seemingly harmless statement get under my skin?  Well, there are two reasons, actually.  First, I don’t think those tables are good for you.  They could actually be causing you some of the very problems you pay your chiropractor to fix.  So in a couple of ways those tables are a perpetual source of inside marketing.  You create your own chronic problem (yet feels relaxing) that keeps you coming back.  Oh yeah, since your insurance company is being billed, who cares?

The other reason the roller table bothers me is that if THAT is the reason many people go to the chiropractor, then there are some weak doctors hurting my profession.  If chiropractic is done right, you’ll be taught how to listen to your body instead of simply being fed “comfort food”.  In my opinion, the roller table is there because the chiropractor is either to scared or too lazy to educate you on the real value of regular chiropractic care.  What if someone told you there’s a power inside you designed to help you live more powerfully and that all the time and effort in that office is for helping you and folks in your community live a better, fuller life?  Would you think the chiropractor was crazy or awesome?

There are chiropractors who believe in YOU and your potential to live a powerful life.  Sadly, they’re somewhat hard to come by.  If you’re looking for someone to help you get more out of your life instead of just getting more out of your wallet, let me know.  I’ll be glad to help you find a good Principled chiropractor in your area.

Good Morning America – Neck adjustments may help high blood pressure

Posted by Marietta chiropractor on March 25, 2008

I wrote about this a few weeks ago.  But, apparently a new study by the University of Chicago shows the benefits of specific chiropractic adjustments of the upper neck can have dramatic effects on blood pressure patients.

If you know someone suffering from chronic high blood pressure and wanting to try a different approach, please share this information with them.  I’m also glad to make a referral to good chiropractors near you, as well.
